Should I take the boot camp or private lessons?

There are advantages to the boot camp and advantages to private lessons.

Advantages of the Boot Camp:

As a group class, the boot camp is more economical ($14.50 per hour, $29 per session), so if price is a concern, that's one advantage. Especially if you're a beginner, you're better off taking the boot camp, since I'll start you off with the same fundamentals either way -- and the $295 price tag is a bargain. Twenty hours of private lessons will cost you $1200. Another major advantage of the group class is that you can learn so much from hearing other voices as they get the technique. You'll learn much more by listening to your fellow students than by listening to yourself. Often it is easier to understand a concept when you hear it demonstrated in lots of different voices than just in your own voice and the teachers. Especially because the teacher is doing so many things right, and you're probably doing so many things wrong. But when someone else, who's in your same shoes gets it, it can be a real ear opener. (University voice programs have done studies where voice students who start in group classes advance faster than those who do not!) Also, the group class is nice if you have any hesitation to sing in front of people. You'll be practicing exercises before you actually sing, and everyone else is in your same shoes, so it provides a nice warm, friendly environment in which to hazzard your first public singing. If you are a social creature who loved study groups in school -- you'll enjoy this immensely.

Advantages of Private Lessons:

Private lessons are ideal for someone who has a solid grounding in singing technique, but needs fine tuning. It is also the way to go for people with seriously pathological voices, people with serious tuning problems, nodes, or other other extreme vocal problems, which require rehabilitation more than technique. Private lessons are also good for people who have specific needs beyond technique, e.g. people who want to split a session with a friend, people want to drill technique on specific songs, extremely shy people, people who want to fix their speaking voice, etc. Also, private lessons may be better for a beginner with excellent study habits and a strong motivation. Are you willing to practice an hour every day? Or if you've got the time and finances, twice a week and lots or practice can take you far. This is a good choice for people with some singing experience who have trouble motivating themselves to practice and want me to push them. There are many other reasons, which I may have forgotten to list.
